Day 1 - Langfang Village
The fog was so thick that the highway was closed the entire day. My driver maneuvered his way through
winding country road. It took us an hour and a half to get from downtown Beijing to Langfang (pronounced as
Lang(2) Fang(2)), a recently developed suburb. The government has designated this new town as a key
development area. A newly built university complex will eventually house over 100,000 students and faculties;
the biggest in the world. In the middle of this sprawling suburb, we arrived at the "Oriental Garden", a
privately owned properties with single family houses. The House of Joy is one of the better maintained houses
within the complex.
There are about 40 kids in the orphanage. Most of them are toddlers. There were
several kids over the age of 2. They are the most active, running around the house, full
of energy. Most of the staff (Ayi in Chinese) who work here are recruited locally. It's a
wonderful thing to see the kids being taken care of properly.
I spent most of Sunday afternoon installing the local area network for Tim and John,
who are the primary leaders in this place. It's the first time I visit charity workers in the
field. I always have a wrong perception that charity workers live in run down places,
deprived of any "normal" way of life. On the contrary, our Father has really blessed
them with everything they need. It's not luxury by any means, of course.
I will spend most of today fixing the rest of the computer network here. Tim and John
are also working on a funding proposal to a number of large corporations in Beijing.
They need the funding to build the new orphanage in a nearby parcel of land. Their
existing place will have to revert back to the owner soon. My skills in proposal and
PowerPoint presentation may come handy. I'll probably play with the kids later on
today.
For me, life begins at thirty eight. Who knows, may be our Father prepares me just for this. Take your first
step forward in faith, and you will encounter things far beyond your imagination.
