Meet Samuel

Meet Samuel

Meet Samuel. Samuel (Dang Liming) will be a teenager soon – and time is growing short for finding his Forever Family. Samuel interacts well with his peers and prefers activity over conversation. In therapy, he loved completing the little obstacle course with a couple of his friends. He was less enthusiastic about learning “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” in sign language for a Children’s Day celebration. Samuel responds well to kindness and gentle encouragement.

Samuel came to live at Shepherd’s Field in 2017, when he was 8 years old. Samuel was born with club feet and his feet were surgically repaired when he was 5 years old. Thankfully, Samuel attended LIH Olivia’s House in Beijing for Physical Therapy after his surgery. He is now able to walk and climb stairs unassisted. Samuel continued to work hard on strength and balance, as well as fine motor skills, while at Shepherd’s Field.

Samuel also has a cognitive and language delay. While at Shepherd’s Field, his therapy also included speech and language. While he knows and understands most Chinese spoken language, he is hesitant in responding verbally. In therapy, he worked on sounds, but in general, jumped to using pictures that correlate with the word in both English and Chinese. This approach encouraged him to begin responding verbally with the English or Chinese. Samuel has also been working on his handwriting/ fine motor skills by learning to write and trace the alphabet, his name and basic Chinese characters.

In August of 2018, Samuel returned to his home orphanage. Our staff visited Samuel in the fall of 2019 and he was happy and doing well. But Samuel longs for a forever family of his own.
